What’s The Relationship between Lead And Pitch in Screw Thread?

In mechanical engineering, the design and functionality of screw threads play a crucial role in various applications.Understanding the relationship between lead and pitch is essential for engineers and designers to ensure the efficient operation of screw driven systems.

Screw Starts:The number of independent threads on the screw shaft.

Lead:The lead of a screw thread refers to the distance traveled axially by the nut or the screw in one complete revolution. It is measured in millimeters or inches and is an indicator of the linear displacement achieved per revolution. In simpler terms, the lead represents the distance the screw or nut moves forward or backward with each complete rotation.

Pitch:The pitch of a screw thread is defined as the axial distance between two adjacent threads. It is measured in millimeters or inches and represents the distance from one thread crest to the corresponding point on the next thread.Essentially, the pitch determines the thread density, indicating how close or spaced out the threads are.

The relationship between lead and pitch is straightforward. The lead is equal to the pitch multiplied by the number of starts on the screw thread.A start refers to a complete thread revolution around the screw's axis.In other words, the lead is the product of the pitch and the number of thread starts.

For example, consider a screw thread with a pitch of 2 mm and a single start. In this case, the lead would also be 2 mm.However,if the same screw thread had a pitch of 2 mm but had two starts, the lead would be 4 mm.This relationship holds true for any screw thread configuration, whether it has a single start or multiple starts.

Single thread: Pitch = lead

Multiple thread: lead = pitch x number of thread starts
